I get quite a few questions about my hair from family, friends, people I meet while out and about and through my social media pages! So, I figured why not create this single post for you all to reference whenever you have a question, or two..or three, about my crown!
Here are the answers to your questions:
1. How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for 3 years (October 1, 2011), but damage free for 7 months (March 31, 2014)! To me that makes a bit of a difference because I can now focus on my true textures and not my natural curls plus damaged strands.
2. Why did you have 3 big chops?
My first big chop was in 2009 to get rid of my relaxed ends. My second chop was in 2011 to get rid of my texlaxed strands. Finally, my last chop was this past year to cut off my heat damaged hair.
3. Will you big chop again?
As of now, I am doing my best not to do any major cuts to my hair. I do have a plan to grow my hair another 6-8 inches so I will not be cutting my hair any time soon. After I reach my goal, you never know...I may cut off a few inches to add layers or just start all over!
4. How did you get your hair so thick?
For as long as I can remember my hair as always been thick. My Mom gives credit to applying Vaseline and castor oil to my hair and scalp every night when I was a kid. She believes those two products are the reason why I have thick strands.
5. What products do you use on your hair?
Currently, I am trying to stick to one line so I can tell if the products are really working for me or not. So now I am trying out Alikay Naturals' line and I have been using their Lemongrass Leave In Conditioner, Essential 17 Growth Hair Oil and Dulce Hydrating Curl Lotion. Also, I still use plain ol' water, almond and coconut oils and shea butter on my hair!
6. How often do you trim your hair?
I trim only when necessary. There is no set schedule. Whenever I notice knots, tangles and excessively dry ends, I simply snip them off.
7. How many inches per year does your hair grow?
My hair grows 6 inches a year, so half of an inch a month...just like most people.
8. How do you get your hair to grow?
I do not do anything extra special. I stick to My Hair Care Regimen <-- click there to read what I do! I also take hair, skin and nail supplements a few times a week. But my regimen works really well for my hair so I do my best to be consistent with that.
9. What do you use on your hair on a daily basis?
Again, you can check out my hair care regimen post but to keep it extra simple and short --
I spray my hair with a water-based leave in conditioner, then I apply an oil (coconut or almond) to my hair, mainly the ends, and then I follow up with a styling cream. Sometimes I do the oil last, before the cream, it just depends on how I feel.
10. Can you recommend a good hair care line or specific products for my hair?
Honestly, this is a tough question to answer as everyone's hair is different and as most of us know -- what may work for my hair may not work for yours. So with that being said, before purchasing, do your research on products that you are interested in, see if the companies have samples you can try out, go with natural and/or organic hair care lines and do not be upset if a certain product does not work for your hair. We all have difference textures, lengths and hair care needs so it will take patience to find the right products! But I am a huge fan of SheaMoisture, Giovanni and Alikay Naturals...oh, and making my own products at home!
11. Do you have a YouTube channel?
Yes....but there are no videos up lol! I created one so that tells you, hopefully in the near future, videos will be up! ;)
