What is a Protective Style?

As naturals we often hear about protective styling and how important it is for our hair. So, what exactly is a protective style, anyway? My definition is any style in which you keep your ends tucked away and requires little to no daily manipulation (just the normal moisturizing and sealing every day). Bantu knots, buns, braids or twists pulled back into a bun, wigs (do not use the combs), kinky twists, tree braids, crochet braids are some of many great protective styles!

I am a huge fan of wearing protective styles, especially during fall and winter. With these styles I am able to retain as much moisture as possible since the cool air tends to dry out my hair a lot. I simply do this by applying water or a leave-in conditioner, then a lightweight oil, followed by a moisturizing or styling cream (also known as the L.O.C. Method : <<< Check out another post of mine to see what products I use for this method)! And, here's a tip: you can moisturize and seal at night before bed that way you eliminate doing this in the morning and possibly leaving the house with wet hair. Your hair will still get the great benefits of the L.O.C. Method. And, I know you remember what your Grandma said about going outside in the cold with a wet head...you'll get sick! :)

And believe it or not, my hair tends to grow the fastest during the fall and winter! This is probably due to the fact that I take care of my hair better during these seasons, faithfully co-washing and deep conditioning and of course, wearing protective styles. If you follow me on Instagram you will know that some of my favorite protective styles include wigs and twists pulled back and pinned up into a bun or faux puff. I can easily wear these styles for weeks to months at a time. With protective styling, I have noticed great growth, thicker strands and healthier hair, overall!! I highly recommend that you rock a protective style for one month and see how your hair benefits from it! (And, make sure the style is not too tight!) Here are some of my favorites on other Naturalistas, hopefully this will serve as inspiration to you as you continue your healthy hair journey:
