Thankfully, my edges have been thick and full for many years now! I'm sure most of you have heard these tips and tricks before and what I do is very simple:
1. Wear a satin bonnet or scarf at night! A bonnet is easier and quicker to put on but be careful of the elastic band; you do not want it to be too tight around your edges. If so, resort to using a satin scarf. Or if you are not really trying to preserve a style, sleeping on a satin pillowcase works just as well. In the end, they all protect your hair while you are asleep!
2. Do scalp massages daily! I can say I am not the first to always remember to do a scalp massage but do them as often as you can. A few minutes a day is all you need. And, for best results, I recommend using an oil that stimulates hair growth such as:
Mielle Organics' Mint Almond Oil (use code 4C to receive $10 off of orders $20 and up, before shipping)
All of these oils are my favorites and they each work wonders on my hair and scalp!
3. Do not wear styles that are tight on your edges (or any part of your scalp/hair)! If you decide to wear braids or twists (with or without extensions), make sure they are not done to the point of you being in pain. I do not know how many times I have had my hair braided only for me to walk away with a headache or my edges hurting. These particular styles should be done tight enough to stay in place but loose enough to protect your hair. Do not be afraid to let your stylist know if the braids or twists are uncomfortable.
4. Stay away from wig combs! Whenever I wear wigs, I do not use the attached combs. Even when I wore my first wig 5 years ago, I was hesitant about using the combs because I did not want to mess up my edges. Years later I still do not use the combs; I gently place enough bobby pins throughout to keep the wig in place and it works perfectly fine.
5. Take care of your body/health! We hear this all of the time - eat healthy, drink water, exercise! All of this is extremely important when it comes to the health of your hair. What you put in your body reflects on the outside so you want to fuel your body with proper nutrients. That way your hair can also benefit from your healthy lifestyle.
I hope these tips help you out! And, as always, if you have any hair-related questions, let me know!

I absolutely love JBCO! I do castor oil challenges and have noticed that my edges are coming back in. I do agree with the tight styles. It's okay to have the baby hair out! No need to braids and twist your thought. Great post!
ReplyDeleteYes, JBCO is one of my favorite oils...the amount of growth I gain from consistently using it is amazing! I look forward to adding it back into my regimen this fall/winter! Thanks for reading...glad you enjoyed it! :)
