How I Do The Greenhouse Effect (for Hair)!

I first heard about the Greenhouse Effect (GHE) for Hair years ago from Mika through her Real Queens website and her YouTube channel.  The GHE is believed to moisturize and grow your hair, if done properly and consistently. When I first learned about this, I was immediately interested because I had on and off issues of keeping my hair moisturized. One month it would be perfectly soft and the next it was extremely dry. So, I tried the GHE for a few months and I remember how my hair was always so soft. At the time I was not so focused on hair growth (believe it or not) so I cannot even remember if my hair grew more than normal but my hair has always grown at the average rate of 1/2 an inch a month.

If you want to know Mika's steps for the GHE click here! I highly recommend visiting her page as she has detailed information about the GHE and answers to the many questions those have about the process.

Here is what I do:

At Night:
1. Massage scalp for 2-5 minutes (I tend to massage my scalp before doing any manipulation/style to my hair)
2. Apply an all natural oil like castor and/or coconut oil to hair only (I prefer applying to dry hair over damp hair and I may not apply oil to my hair every night, it depends on how my hair feels)
3. Twist or braid hair and tuck ends away using bobby pins
4. Put on plastic grocery bag/or shower cap
5. Tie a satin scarf around head
6. Cover with a satin bonnet or a skully hat/beanie and you're good to go for the evening!

*I make sure the bag, scarf and bonnet completely cover my head but for the picture I pulled everything back so you can see how I put everything on!*

In the Morning:
*Your hair will be damp so keep this in mind when planning hairstyles
1. Take off hat/beanie or bonnet, scarf and plastic grocery bag/shower cap
2. Moisturize and seal hair doing the LOC Method
2. Style hair

FYI: I still follow my hair care regimen when doing the GHE.

My goal is to do the Greenhouse Effect faithfully for at least 5 nights out of the week during the fall and winter (now until March 2015). I believe that if I am consistent with doing this regimen, I will notice a tremendous amount of moisture with my hair and a slightly higher than normal hair growth rate. My current hair length goal is to reach mid back length (MBL) by the end of next summer so this is just another step that I am taking to reach that goal!
