Here are a few last minute things you can do to make sure your mane starts off happy and healthy in 2015:
1. Make a list of your hair goals! Most of us have in mind what our hair goals are but jot down that actual list on paper. Make sure to place the list somewhere in your house (like your bathroom) where you will see those goals on a daily basis. You want to stay motivated during your journey and having that list in front of you every day will keep you encouraged and on track!
2. Trim off any damaged ends! Please, please, please get rid of those damaged, split, broken ends, unless you are transiting in 2015. If not, just go ahead and trim those damaged pieces off. I know how it feels to get rid of length, especially when you have dreams of growing your hair to your waist, but getting rid of these frail ends will only benefit your hair journey. And remember, if you are doing the right things to your hair, scalp and body, your hair will grow!
3. Perfect your hair care regimen! Depending on how much you experiment with products you may have a pretty good idea on what your hair loves, likes and hates (I know, 'hate' is such a strong word but your hair and scalp will tell you what they do not like). Donate or throw out anything that does not work for your hair. Go back to using those products that did amazing things for your hair and begin to incorporate those into your hair care regimen. Do your best to stick with those faithful products that always give great results.
4. Purchase products in advance! Have your bathroom closet stocked with your favorite hair care products! You never want to run out of a certain product that you faithfully use and then have to resort to whatever other product is just laying around. I am not suggesting to purchase 30 jars and 20 bottles of your favorite hair care products but have an extra 1 or 2 bottles/jars on hand in case a hair-related issue may come up.
5. Clean your hair tools! Before the new year comes in, make sure you clean all of your hair tools and items. This will include your brush, comb, flat iron, blow dryer comb, diffuser, rollers/curlers, pillowcase, bonnet, scarf, wrap, bobby pins, basically anything that you use to style, protect or prepare your hair. Make it a habit to regularly clean these items to avoid product build up.
6. Be active in the natural hair community! Whether you are transitioning, a newly natural or have been natural for years, still allow yourself to be educated about hair care. There are thousands of hair care and hair inspiration accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Many naturals are creating blogs and websites to share their hair journeys and stories to encourage other naturals. Believe it or not, there are a few books dedicated to natural hair care and have received excellent reviews! So stop by your local library to see what they may have available. Also, be of an encouragement to other natural kids, ladies and gentlemen out there. Stay connected with the natural hair community and share what you have learned, what products you use and how being natural has changed your life!
