I know firsthand that it can be difficult to snip off any hair length especially when you are trying to grow your hair out. As time passed, I realized my hair does not flourish as much when I hold on to dead strands. Doing so does nothing for my hair and if anything it just makes taking care of my hair more difficult. So, I have come to the conclusion that trims are very necessary if I want my hair to be its healthiest and longest!
Here is the rundown of
MY TRIMMING ROUTINE
How often do you trim?
I trim my ends only when necessary. I do not have a set schedule because my ends do not need to be trimmed according to a schedule. For instance, say if I put it on my calendar to trim every 6 weeks, if that time comes and I notice that my ends are healthy, what would be the purpose of me trimming? It's not necessary. So, I only trim when my ends are in desperate need to go.
How do you know when to trim your hair?
My ends get clipped when they are excessively dry, tangled and/or damaged. When I have stuck to my routine and "babied" my hair and my ends are still raggedy after a few weeks, I just go ahead and trim them. I do always try to give my hair some extra TLC prior to trimming to see if that may be the solution. Sometimes it works and sometimes my ends just have to be clipped.
How much do you trim?
I only trim what needs to be taken off. Some areas may only need a snippet taken off and others may need 1/4 to 1/2 inch taken off, it really depends on my strands.
What method do you use for trimming your hair?
I use the search and destroy method when trimming my hair. Basically, I go throughout my entire head and see what ends need to be trimmed and I only clip the damaged, dry pieces.
What kind of hair shears/scissors do you use?
Currently, I use a cheapie pair. Not the best idea, I know! But they do work and get the job done. I am planning to purchase a better quality pair in the future after I do some more research. Until then, I will keep using what I have and thankfully I do not have to use them often since my hair is doing pretty good.
Do you trim your hair when in its natural state or when straight?
I prefer to trim my hair in its natural state. That way I can really see what needs to be trimmed and only trim what is necessary. Sometimes, I twist my hair and trim the ends that way or I will leave it loose and do the search and destroy method.
Do you trim your hair when wet or dry?
My hair is always dry when I trim it. I do make sure to properly detangle my hair first and then I will let it completely air dry before starting my trim. When my hair is wet, it clumps up which makes it hard to pinpoint which strands need to be trimmed.
